La bohème
by Giacomo Puccini
The starving bohemians of 19th century Paris learn how to make love, how to make friends and influence people, and how to survive in a cold, hard world. Picture dorm life without laundry privileges or a cafeteria card.

It may be the most romantic opera of all time, set among the rooftops and cafés of the down-and-out Latin Quarter, (2 parts Soho, one part Deep Ellum). Puccini's unforgettable music, poignant romance and a stellar cast will take you back to a time when hunger for success couldn't hold a candle to one's hunger for love. Cash-starved students can take advantage of our Student Rush, 90 minutes before each performance. Get the best seat available for just $25 with a valid Student ID (One ticket per ID).

International Cast Highlights
Maria Kanyova - Mimi

The American soprano, Maria Kanyova, has received equal praise for her portrayals of the leading heroines in Italian, French, German, Russian and Czech opera with companies throughout the United States. Dallas audiences first saw her as Nedda in our last Pagliacci. She recently portrayed Pat Nixon in John Adam’s opera Nixon in China, which was recorded and will be released on the Naxos label.
James Valenti* - Rodolfo

One reviewer put it best – James Valenti is “an old-school tenor with a clear, crystalline, hall-filling voice and a natural acting style". You’ve seen his picture on the DART busses around town, come HEAR the real reason he is already a rising star.
Valentina Farcas* - Musetta

Valentina Farcas's Salzburg Festival debut as Blonde in Die Entführung aus dem Serail was met with wide critical acclaim and was released on DVD on the Decca label. Her performances as ‘Musetta’ in La bohème marks her debut with our company and was to have been her American debut. However, last season, she was asked to step into performances of ‘Adina’ in Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’amore at the Palm Beach Opera to rave reviews.
Dwane Croft* - Marcello

The 1996 winner of the prestigious Richard Tucker Foundation Award, American baritone Dwayne Croft has established himself as a leading artist with prominent opera theaters throughout the world. He makes a long-anticipated debut with The Dallas Opera as Marcello in La bohème. Dwayne’s brother, tenor Richard Croft, has already sung many leading roles with The Dallas Opera.

Where have I heard THAT before?
In the 1982 cult film, "Fitzcarraldo;" 1997's "Mad City;" and 1999s "Pushing Tin" a black comedy starring John Cusack and Billy Bob Thornton, to name a few.

Conversation Starters:
The stories behind La bohème first appeared in 1845 in the Parisian periodical, "Le Corsaire." An unpublished 23-year-old poet, Henri Murger, received just 15 francs per episode but was later awarded the Legion of Honor by his grateful countrymen. The original plan for the opera was for five acts, including one in which Musetta throws a party for the bohemians as her furniture is carried away for failure to pay the rent.

Did you know?
Murger called all his girlfriends "Mimi" so he wouldn't have to remember their real names in the morning.
