Roberto Devereux
by Gaetano Donizetti
Fantastic singing and unforgettable personalities mix in this action-packed clash of British royals and rebels. Fiery, feisty, gripping - It doesn't get better than this.

She gave her name to the "Elizabethan Age," but her heart went to the wrong man and heads must roll! This riveting drama pits England's Queen Elizabeth I against the clever and ambitious Robert, Earl of Essex, his demure lady love - and her unsuspecting husband. Donizetti's last and greatest opera for Teatro San Carlo is as passionate as it is political. Pick your side... carefully. Or pick all five productions for as little as $75!

International Cast Highlights
Hasmik Papian* - Elizabeth

Hasmik Papian is regarded as one of the most important lyrical-dramatic sopranos worldwide. Recent reviews have called her performances “drop-dead gorgeous … pure magic … heavenly … divine …”. The Armenian soprano, a favorite at The Metropolitan Opera, makes her TDO debut as Elizabeth I in Roberto Deveruex.
Stephen Costello - Roberto Devereux

Stephen Costello’s debut on Opening Night of the Metropolitan Opera’s 2007-2008 Season announced the arrival of a major new tenor. Dallas audiences already knew this though. He had already made his stunning debut as Leicester in our Maria Stuarda the previous year. We are delighted that Stephen is back for this title role – and will return to create a pivotal role in Moby Dick next season.
Elizabeth Batton - Sara

One of the most exciting young mezzo sopranos today, Elizabeth Batton was a grand winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 2003. Dallas audiences last saw her in our production of Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos. She is married to Texas tenor Garrett Sorenson and they are the proud parents of a little boy who will turn one during the run of Roberto Devereux.
David Kepmster - Duke of Nottingham

David Kempster won the Young Welsh Singer Competition in 1998, and in 1999 represented Wales in the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. David made his American debut with The Dallas Opera in Madama Butterfly and was nominated for the Maria Callas Debut Artist of the Year.

Where have I heard THAT before?
You've encountered Donizetti's music in some unlikely places, like the 1997 Bruce Willis Science Fiction cult classic, "The Fifth Element;" 1991's "Cape Fear;" Martin Scorcese's "The Departed" (2006) and "Any Given Sunday" (1999).

Conversation Starters:
Despite the success of Roberto Devereux, its composer was convinced, almost from the start, that the opera was "jinxed." Nevertheless, Donizetti carefully prepared at least four different productions of this work and it is today considered a masterpiece. It's thought that Beethoven's early piano sonatas may have influenced the introduction to the Tower Scene in Act III and that Verdi's Aida and La forza del destino were inspired, in part, by the music of Roberto Devereux.

Did you know?
Donizetti was an incredible letter writer, more than a thousand survive today. Can you imagine what he could have done with an ergonomic keyboard and a memory stick?
