In Billy Wilder’s 1950 classic “Sunset Boulevard” starring Gloria
Swanson as the aging starlet, Norma Desmond, the “Dance of The
Seven Veils” is featured. It’s also seen in “Black Widow” (1954)
starring Ginger Rogers.
When Salome opened at the Met in New York City in 1905, there
was such a public outcry about the passionate subject matter and
Wilde’s “immoral” behavior that the opera closed after just
one performance.
During the “Dance of The Seven Veils,” most sopranos opt to wear
a body stocking, but not American soprano Maria Ewing. During
the 1990s productions of Salome in London and San Francisco,
she performed completely nude under her seventh veil. An opera
buff, indeed!
