Did You Know
The new General Director has a musical tie to Dallas: George's great, great, grandfather, Joseph Maynor, had a music store in Dallas in the late 1800's - Alcott & Maynor.
About George Steel
George Steel has changed the musical landscape of New York. Executive director of Miller Theatre since 1997, he has earned a reputation for innovative programming and audience building. Steel received the 2004-2005 ASCAP-Chamber Music America (CMA) Award for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music; he was awarded the 2003 Trailblazer Award from the American Music Center; the 2003 ASCAP Concert Music Award; and the 2001-2002 ASCAPCMA Award. New York magazine recognized Steel’s programming in its 2005 “Cultural Elite” issue, listing Miller Theatre as having the “Best Music Programming before 1800 or after 1990.” Steel is the founder of groups dedicated to Renaissance vocal polyphony (Vox Vocal Ensemble), Baroque period-instrument performance (Gotham City Baroque Orchestra), and works of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries (Gotham City Orchestra and Sinfonietta).

Critical Acclaim:
"George Steel, Executive Director, Miller Theatre, Columbia University: Has turned Miller Theatre from tweedy backwater to hip brand and one of the best destinations anywhere for contemporary music. Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center are listening: Both have amped up their new-music offerings in recent years." - NEW YORK MAGAZINE'S "INFLUENTIALS" ISSUE
"Steel has an uncanny talent for programming and shaping performances that excite and inspire people of all ages and levels of musical familiarity." - THE NEW YORK SUN
"George Steel's success suggests that if the setting is right, the players are enthusiastic and the program is bracing, rock fans who listen to Radiohead and the Beastie Boys might also groove to works like György Ligeti's mesmerizing Piano Etudes." - THE NEW YORK TIMES
"No one has his finger on the pulse of New York's new-music scene more surely than George Steel, the intrepid executive director of Columbia University's Miller Theatre, and the consistency of his taste is a reassurance in uncertain times." - THE NEW YORKER
"Since Steel began programming the Miller season, the theater has reclaimed its place as an oasis of intrepid culture; even in a city as rich as New York, the Miller Theatre stands out, and that is due not only to Columbia's benevolent hand but to Steel's consummate taste and enterprising zeal." - BILLBOARD
