Begun in the 1960’s as a field trip to the opera for students, The School Performances Program has expanded and matured to now include an interdisciplinary curriculum which supports standardized, state mandated educational objectives, not only for music but also in math, social studies, language arts, and science.
The School Performances for 2007-2008 will be Tosca by Giacomo Puccini at the Music Hall at Fair Park. Tickets are $9.00 for students and teachers. The special two-hour performances of Tosca will feature English translations above the stage, enabling children to understand the words as they are sung. Students will receive a fascinating glimpse of life back-stage, as scene changes are made with the curtain raised.

The School Performances curriculum is developed by North Texas area teachers, each proficient in their own disciplines and familiar with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) guidelines. Each fall, teams of teachers from area schools attend the in-service training, and receive free curriculum materials, which include teacher guides, student lessons and activities, student newspapers, and video and music DVD's of the selected opera. Attendance at the 2 ½ hour training session is required in order to bring students to a School Performance.
