There’s no question that Plácido Domingo made his United States debut with The Dallas Opera in 1961, but there has always been a certain amount of controversy over the exact year in which he was born. Because Plácido started singing as a very young man and had already accomplished so much before making his Metropolitan Opera debut in 1968, many people were convinced he had to be older than he claimed. Buried deep within The Dallas Opera archives, we discovered a telegram from Mr. Domingo’s managers in Mexico, commenting on the issue of his eligibility for dual citizenship. This document confirms that Plácido Domingo was born in Spain on January 21, 1941 – making the superstar exactly as old as he claims, age 65 and as powerful a singer as ever. A bit of quick mental math will also confirm that he was a mere twenty years old when he first appeared onstage at The Dallas Opera!
