Opera Scholars

Through a series of class sessions, high school students are introduced to opera as an art form and receive a behind-the-scenes look at the many aspects of bringing an opera production to the stage. Students study and attend final dress rehearsals or performances of some of the season’s operas. The entire program has been underwritten by The Dallas Opera and its patrons, so there is no cost to the students selected.

    Opera scholars will learn about:
  • TDO Productions
  • Opera History
  • Voice types and their registers
  • Careers in opera
  • Relationship between roles and voice types
  • Opera composers and their styles
  • Opera vs. Operetta vs. Musical Theater

    They will attend:
  • Final dress rehearsals or mainstage productions
  • Opera Insights
  • Opera Overtures
  • Tours of rehearsal and opera facilities
Requirements
Students should have a strong interest in an opera career and be able to attend all scheduled sessions. Candidates must be nominated by their high school music teachers. Nominations are limited to two per teacher. A class of 15 students from the pool of teacher nominations will be selected by the Opera Scholars committee.

How to Nominate
If you are a high school music teacher and wish to nominate a student, please contact The Dallas Opera Education Department at 214.443.1082 for more information. The teacher nomination forms and student applications will be mailed to all area high schools in mid September.
